Starting a business and making it work is the primary purpose for having a business to begin with. If your goal for starting a business was to fail, why start one at all. When you start and run a business, you have only one option and that is top succeed. The only problem is that there are several barriers in front of you that could inhibit your ability to become successful.

That's a good point, and one that many entrepreneurs fail to remember. It seems that the mantra of "build it and they will come" has become quite popular - especially with internet companies.

As an entrepreneurship major at my University, I'm well aware of the benefits to planning.

Another point I'd like to add is that not only are successful entrepreneurs continuously measuring their progress, they're also updating their vision as the need arises.

Very interesting and profound... but I think they missed one critical step. Vision. We need to have a vision, with absolutely clarity, on where we are heading. How can you get to your destination if you don't know where it is? I have met many (unsuccessful) entrepreneurs that are just "doing whatever I can to get rich". That is far from a vision... and the results inevitably are far from getting rich. Conversely I know others that are planning to achieve X (X - is a very detailed description of their vision) by Y (a date) and are continuously measuring their progress to their destination. These people inevitably are far more successful.
